You Can Have a Fishy, on a Little Dishy
This unique water themed watercolour was a wonderful commission from Strange Cargo back in 2019.
Artist Brief: The Fishing Fleet
Strange Cargo was commissioned to create an artwork to celebrate the men, families and 200 registered vessels that form the long history of Folkestone’s fishing fleet. The commission from St. Peter’s Church on The Durlocks in Folkestone has been funded by Heritage Lottery.
St. Peter’s was built as the fisherman’s church 150 years ago and our proposal is to create a series of small, landscape images responding to their history that will be permanently installed in the area of the church dedicated to the fishermen.
To inform the project, Strange Cargo has been working with the Folkestone fishing museum and local fishermen, conducting interviews and researching archives, stories and historic events connected to the fishing industry in the town. Following this research, twenty short accounts have been identified and 20 artists are being invited to create one image each to illustrate one of these accounts.
The story I received was one of the fisherman's fishing calendar., listing the catches of the month. This circle reads as a calendar of catches throughout the year. The outer edge is January the centre, of course, is December.
The original was executed in watercolour, biro and 23ct gold leaf on paper
